Word Hunt!

We are reading the book "I Was A Rat" by Philip Pullman. We are enjoying the humorous story of Roger who was changed into a pageboy from a rat back in the story of Cinderella. Today we created word lists of words the author used that intrigue us, capture our interest, or maybe we aren't familiar with. Do you know these words?  Or would you have to look them up?  Can you help us out in the comment section by picking a word from their list and defining it in "kid friendly" language?  Tell us where you are from too!

45 comments:

  1. Scoundrel: I know this word because Princess Leia calls Han Solo a scoundrel. It means someone who sometimes does bad things like stealing. Han Solo is a scoundrel.

Hooligans: I know this word because some of my students are hooligans. I think it means someone who is lively, active and free-thinking. Sometimes it has a negative meaning for people who break the rules or are up to no good. Some of my students are hooligans.

Sorely: I wasn't sure what this word meant so I looked it up. It means something that is very intense or extreme. I sorely missed playing baseball.

Greengrocer: I wasn't sure what this word meant, but I did understand that it had something to do with groceries. A greengrocer is someone who works in a grocery store and works with fruits and vegetables. Lina's friend works in the greenhouses so she might be a greengrocer.
